Description
Product Overview
Laboratory ventilation square duct is a polypropylene (PP) air duct with flange reinforcement design, made for lab exhaust and exhaust gas treatment duct runs. It is a square-section duct used in laboratory ventilation systems: hoisted above the ceiling, connected to exhaust points such as fume hoods, universal hoods and medicine cabinets through branch pipes, and exhausted at the end by a PP induced draft fan.
Flange reinforcement gives the sections stable joints and good compression resistance, and PP’s acid and alkali resistance suits the corrosive gases common in laboratory exhaust. The duct is available in standard PP or flame retardant PPs, with socket or flange connections, in sizes confirmed per project. For the rectangular range generally, see Polypropylene Rectangular Ducts.
A lab exhaust duct is one part of a ventilation system: it connects to fans, fittings and airflow dampers rather than replacing them, and matching square elbows, flanges, tees and dampers are available from the same supplier, so a complete PP duct line can be specified from one source.

Material & Performance
Laboratory ventilation square duct is made from polypropylene, selected for the corrosive gas handling that laboratory exhaust demands:
- Acid and alkali resistance: PP withstands corrosion by high-concentration acids and alkalis across a wide pH range (pH 1-14), preventing secondary chemical reactions between the exhaust medium and the duct body.
- Smooth wall, low flow resistance: the smooth, uniform wall keeps flow resistance low and resists scaling and deposit buildup in the run.
- Sound insulation: PP reduces vibration and noise caused by air flow.
- Flange reinforcement: sections are reinforced with flange welding where the duct body needs extra support, giving stable joints and better compression resistance.
- Light weight and easy installation: PP duct is light, easy to install and operate, and has weldability – an advantage when sections are handled above ceiling level.
Flame retardant PPs is available where fire-rated ductwork is required; specify the required flame retardant grade when inquiring.
Applications
How a Laboratory Ventilation System Uses Square Duct
In a laboratory ventilation system, square PP duct is hoisted above the indoor ceiling and connected to the exhaust points through branch pipes:
- Fume hood exhaust – hoods are connected through branch ducts to the main run
- Universal hood and medicine cabinet exhaust – bench-level exhaust points joined to the same system
- Main and branch duct – square duct is used as main and branch pipe, and can be combined with PP round ducts in the same system
- System end – the run is exhausted at the end by a PP induced draft fan
The same PP duct is also used for exhaust gas treatment and general ventilation pipe runs outside laboratories, wherever corrosive fume handling and a square section are needed.
Selection Notes & Quotation Information
Lab System Considerations
When sizing lab exhaust duct, the number and type of fume hoods and cabinets, their airflow requirements, and the available static pressure of the fan setup determine the duct cross-section and wall thickness. Confirm the required width, height, wall thickness and section length against your duct schedule, and specify the material grade and connection method for each joint.
To Quote Lab Exhaust Duct
Provide: required width, height, wall thickness, section length and quantity, material grade (PP or flame retardant PPs), color, connection method (socket or flange), application and fume hood details, destination port, and your duct schedule or drawings. Gas composition and temperature help confirm wall thickness and reinforcement for the actual duty.

Installation & System Integration
Laboratory ventilation square duct is connected with socket or flange joints:
- Socket connection: a PP sleeve is welded at the section end so the next section inserts for a stable joint – fast field installation above ceiling level.
- Flange connection: PP flanges are welded to the duct and joined with screws – suited to high-sealing working conditions and allows maintenance disassembly.
Complete systems combine lab exhaust ducts with matching accessories: PP 90° elbows, square tees, reducers and flanges. See the full range of PP duct systems.

FAQ
What is a laboratory ventilation square duct?
It is a square-section polypropylene (PP) air duct with flange reinforcement design, used in laboratory ventilation systems. It is hoisted above the ceiling, connects fume hoods, universal hoods and cabinets through branch pipes, and is exhausted at the end by a PP fan.
What is it used for?
It carries corrosive exhaust air from fume hoods and cabinets in laboratory ventilation systems, and is also used for exhaust gas treatment and general ventilation pipe runs.
What sizes are available?
Lab exhaust duct is made to order. Width, height, wall thickness and section length are confirmed per project against your duct schedule and drawings.
Is flame retardant PP available?
Yes. PPs flame retardant grade is available; specify the required flame retardant grade when inquiring.
How is it connected?
Two standard methods are offered: socket connection (a PP sleeve at the section end receives the next section) and flange connection (screwed flanges for high-sealing duties). Sections are reinforced with flange welding where extra support is needed.
What do I need to provide for a quote?
Width, height, wall thickness, length and quantity, material grade, connection method, application and fume hood details, destination port, and your duct schedule or drawings. Gas composition and temperature help confirm wall thickness.
